Recently a guest on Bloomberg TV's "Market Makers," Portfolio Manager Jay Kaplan talked with hosts Stephanie Ruhle and Tom Keene about finding value in small-cap companies, particularly those with solid corporate governance that pay dividends, and family owned businesses that have evolved over time.

"If you think about companies that are closely held, where management has a lot of ownership, we're seeing special dividends, so alignment of ownership of management and outside owners seems to be working," stated Jay. "We've always focused on companies all along that have been good stewards of capital management, who buy back stock, pay dividends," he added.

The segment—which aired November 27, 2012—also touched upon finding opportunities in a market nearing a fiscal cliff. Jay concluded by discussing two retailers he likes.

Jay Kaplan is the portfolio manager of Royce Dividend Value Fund (with Chuck Royce), Royce Total Return Fund (with Chuck Royce), Royce Value Fund (with Whitney George), and Royce Capital Fund – Small-Cap Portfolio. He also acts as the assistant portfolio manager of Royce Pennsylvania Mutual Fund.
