In the December 2011 issue of Morningstar FundInvestor, Kailin Liu spotlights Royce Special Equity Multi-Cap Fund as a top ten best performing mutual fund.
"The fund's omission of financial-services stocks protected the portfolio from that sector's substantial losses this year, while opportunities in consumer stocks have boosted performance."
The Fund seeks long-term growth of capital by using an intensive value approach that attempts to combine classic value analysis, the identification of good businesses and accounting cynicism. The fund has no market cap restrictions; however, Royce expects that a significant portion of its assets may be invested in mid- and large-cap companies with market capitalizations of more than $5 billion.
Charlie Dreifus manages the firm's Special Equity products, including Royce Special Equity Fund, which started 13 years ago and Royce Special Equity Multi-Cap Fund, which celebrates one year in December. Both funds attempt to combine classic value analysis, the identification of good business and accounting cynicism.
