On November 16, 2011, Royce Total Return Fund manager, Jay Kaplan, was a guest on CNBC's Closing Bell.
Kaplan described Royce's "three-pronged philosophy: Number one is companies with strong balance sheets, number two is companies with high returns on capital and number three, you have to buy them right. We look for inexpensive valuations, we hold them for 3 to 5 years, and over time it's worked out pretty well."
He is currently seeing value in asset managers and re-insurance companies.
Mr. Kaplan manages Royce Total Return Fund (with Chuck Royce), Royce Value Fund (with Whitney George), Royce Dividend Value Fund (with Chuck Royce) and Royce Capital Fund - Small-Cap Portfolio. He also serves as an assistant portfolio manager for Royce Pennsylvania Mutual Fund.
