George and Zaino Named among Barron's/Value Line Featured 100 Managers

Whitney George, Assistant Portfolio Manager of Royce Value Plus Fund (RYVPX), and Buzz Zaino, Portfolio Manager of Royce Opportunity Fund (RYPNX) were chosen in this year's Barron's/Value Line mutual-fund survey of 100 Managers. (Effective May 2007 James Skinner was named the lead portfolio manager for Royce Value Plus Fund (RYVPX), with George as Assistant.)

Managers were chosen according to "how well they performed on a risk-adjusted basis relative to others following the same investment strategy." To select the Managers highlighted in the survey, Value Line screened 1,008 equity funds, first eliminating offerings with more than two lead managers and managers with less than three years' tenure. The survey is based on the performance of the manager with the longer tenure, and co-managers must share day-to-day management of the fund. The survey is then organized by nine investment objectives. This year's survey includes funds with assets of $200 million or more. Only 564 managers qualified for ranking (on the basis of the oldest share class of each fund). Managers were chosen based on how much risk-adjusted value they added relative to others with the same Value Line investment objective.

The Value Line system uses volatility as a proxy for risk, rewarding managers who generate more stable returns. For example, if a fund's return is judged to be 25% more volatile than its peers - on a monthly basis over the manager's tenure - Value Line expects it to be able to generate 25% greater returns. Value Line gives a score of zero to a manager with average performance and volatility for a particular investment objective. Superior managers get positive scores commensurate with the value they've added to a fund's performance on an annualized basis.  Barron's recommends that investors should regard the list as a "research tool" and that the system has its "limitations."
